The Cisco UCS B480 M5 Blade Server model belongs to the fifth generation of Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) servers that this multinational has just launched on the market. In this regard, Cisco UCS M5 systems can support a greater number of workloads by being equipped with twice the memory capacity and provide up to 86 percent higher performance compared to the previous generation (M4). This is especially important for data-intensive workloads such as real-time analytics and in-memory computing.
Based on the new range of Intel Xeon Scalable processors, the server (four processors and up to 28 cores per socket) is a scalable enterprise-class approach in compact format that provides performance, versatility and density for multiple workloads. Specifically, Cisco refers to mission-critical, memory-intensive applications, databases or virtualized workloads.
Cisco UCS B480 M5 Blade Server Analysis – Key Features
The Cisco UCS B480 M5 Blade Server system supports up to 6 Tbytes of memory (with 128 Gbyte DIMMs), four SAS, SATA, SSD or NVMe disks, and Ethernet connectivity of up to 160 Gbytes. It also supports the Cisco FlexFlash SD card storage subsystem and supports Dual M.2 SATA SSD and four GPUs. The memory, to which we have referred above, is of DDR4 class and scales at a speed of 2,666 Mhz. A Cisco UCS chassis (6 rack units) can hold a total of four such blade servers.
In total, five mezzanine card adapters are provided, a term used to describe the stacking of computer component cards into a single card that is then connected to the computer bus or data path. They are distributed as follows: on the one hand, a slot for the virtual interface of Cisco UCS and, on the other, two slots for VIC, GPU or flash memory options. It is completed with two additional slots for, for example, GPU as well.
In another order of things, the server chosen by Cisco is compatible with 3D XPoint. It is a type of non-volatile memory technology whose features promise read and writes speeds up to 1,000 times faster than flash memories. Its durability is also better.

Especially indicated to obtain the highest performance in physical and virtual workloads -and with a simple and automated management thanks to Cisco UCS Manager- some of the applications that will take advantage of their full potential are: SAP, SAP HANA, SQL, Oracle, data applications warehouse and large virtualized environments including Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), real-time financial applications, server consolidation and Java-based workloads.
The Cisco UCS B480 M5 Blade Server system also supports the new Cisco Intersight management platform. It is a management and automation platform hosted in the computer cloud for Cisco HyperFlex and Cisco UCS systems. With Intersight, the firm advocates for the most simplified infrastructure management and bets (equally) for automatic analytics and learning by having a recommendation engine that provide actionable intelligence. In addition, improved capabilities and tight integration with Cisco TAC allow for more efficient support because Intersight automates the sending of files to speed up the resolution of potential problems.
The management tasks continue with Cisco UCS Manager and UCS Central Software. The first is characterized by providing a unified and incorporated management of all software and hardware components in Cisco UCS, controlling multiple chassis and managing resources for thousands of virtual machines. The second, in turn, expands the possibilities of the previous one, supports the management of multiple distributed domains, and manages the service profiles, pools, policies and firmwares, among other features.
Cisco UCS Director is also found (it has been developed to automate end-to-end IT processes through virtualization, server, computing, networking and storage resources to achieve these business objectives), and Cisco UCS Performance Manager: by providing visibility into infrastructure resources for performance monitoring and capacity planning, what is allowed is for IT systems to optimize these same resources.
