The Dell EMC PowerEdge R740 server has been optimized for the acceleration of workloads and thanks to its 2U platform and two sockets achieves an optimal balance of resources in demanding environments.
Dell has selected for this analysis a rack server available in up to four versions to adapt to the needs of different businesses. Specifically, the proposal maximizes application performance with the optimal combination of accelerator cards, computing power (and storage on a two-socket platform) and 2U optimized for VDI. In addition to the virtual desktop infrastructure, the Dell EMC PowerEdge R740 server is also suitable for workloads related to private cloud, artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Analysis of Dell EMC PowerEdge R740 Server
To expand and optimize application performance, the Dell EMC PowerEdge R740 Server scales up to three 300W accelerator cards or six 150 W GPUs. This feature highlights, or reflects, the versatility it provides and is basic to be able to adapt practically to any class or type of application. In this regard, it can also offer a maximum of 16 units of 2.5 inches or half, eight, with a size of 3.5 inches each. Thanks to iDRAC9 it is possible to expand to respond to all kinds of demands and simplify the entire IT life cycle.
In another order of things, and thanks to Intel Xeon SP processors, it provides a 27% increase in processing cores and 50% in the case of the increase in bandwidth over the previous generation of Xeon processors. Specifically, the Dell EMC PowerEdge R740 server has been developed to support up to two Intel Xeon SP processors and a maximum of 28 cores per processor. Likewise, it is also possible to free up storage space using SSD memories with an M.2 interface; interface that is characterized among other reasons for its speed (optimization for startup). The fact of extending the implementations of VDI with three double-wide GPUs means admitting up to 50% more users than if we compare this server with its predecessor, the R730 model.
Dell EMC PowerEdge R740 server – Security and Administration
Security is becoming more important every day and, in this sense, the Dell EMC PowerEdge R740 server takes advantage of the new security features implemented by the manufacturer to strengthen the protection demanded by companies and that the data remains always safe. The starts are safe; bet on cryptographically signed firmware packages; and unauthorized or malicious changes are avoided thanks to Server Lockdown. In the case of System Erase, this option is applied as a cleaning system that removes all data from storage media, including hard drives, SSDs and system memory in a fast and secure manner.
Automate systems administration with OpenManage. At this point, the Dell EMC OpenManage portfolio helps deliver optimal efficiency for PowerEdge servers with intelligent and automated management of routine tasks. Combined with unique agentless management features, this server is easily managed, freeing up time for high-profile projects. Thus, the new OpenManage Enterprise console simplifies tasks related to administration, with the creation of personalized reports and automatic discovery. Taking advantage of the capabilities and functionalities of QuickSync 2, it is possible to gain access to the machine through mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.
The companies, on the other hand, have proactive diagnostics and it is possible to take advantage of the existing management consoles with the simple integrations for VMware vSphere, Microsoft System Center and Nagios.
Configuration of Dell EMC PowerEdge R740 Server
As we indicated at the beginning of this text, the manufacturer proposes four versions of this server. The nerve center, where the processor is located, supports up to two Intel Xeon SPs and 28 cores per processor. Regarding the memory, it is possible to alternate between 24 DDR4 DIMM slots with 3 Terabytes of maximum size and 12 NVDIMM and capacity of up to 192 Gbytes. And for the hard disk, the capacity reaches the figure of 60 Terabytes in the case of the units of 2.5 inches and maximum of 80 Terabytes for the 3.5 inches. The depth of the chassis is located in a size of 715.05 mm.
With integrated management, it supports hot-plug power supplies with full redundancy and a maximum of six fans, also hot-plug and with full redundancy. Network secondary card options are considered (4 of 1GE or 2 of 10 GE + 2 of 1 GE or 4 of 10 GE or 2 of 25 GE) and lift with up to 8 PCIe Gen 3 slots, with a maximum of 4 slots x16 .
As front ports we have: video, 2 USB 2.0, USB 3.0 and dedicated iDRAC Direct micro-USB; the following ones are the following: video, series, 2 USB 3.0 and dedicated iDRAC network port. The video card is VGA. Finally, comment on its compatibility with the following operating systems: Canonical Ubuntu, Citrix LTS, XenServer, and Microsoft Windows Server with Hyper-V, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and VMware ESXi.
